TUTORIALSTENCIL

This is a large stencil that includes 3 birds, but I have chosen to feature just two of them on this card front.

Let’s Get Started:

Card Base: 4.25 x 11,, scored and folded at 5.5

Card Face:3 7/8 x 5.5

Strip of black cardstock:

Small Scrap of Cardstock for Sentiment: 1/8 x 5.5

Card Face:

  • I secured the stencil with Mint Tape so that the two birds shown were centered on the card face.

  • I used Mint Tape to mask off the beaks and the legs of both birds. (I also masked the the parts of the third bird that were on the card face.)

  • I got out both full sized brushes and #0 Shading brushes.

  • Using a full sized brush I applied pink ink to tails and the upper outline of the birds. I ensured good coverage over the tails , but I allowied the colour to fade as it moved down away from the top.

  • Again using a full sized brush I added yellow ink to the bottom edges of the bird, and brought it up to mix with the pink ink already there. I went back and forth with the pink and yellow brushes over the middle until there was a good blend.

  • Using a shading brush I added a tiny bit of purple along the bellies and chests of both birds and blended it into the yellow.

  • Using another small shading brush I added orange to the beaks and the legs.

Other:

  • I stamped the sentiment onto cardstock, and cut the strip with my paper trimmer; I cut the angled ends with my scissors.

  • I added dimensional foam tape to the back of the sentiment.

Assembly

  • I glued the card face to the card base, alligning t tight to the left hand side.

  • I glued the narrow black strip of cardstock along the right hand side of the card face.

  • I removed the backing from the dimensional tape and added the sentiment.

Final thoughts:

I love working with stencils - if you've been here before, you already know that! - and I loved this one the moment I saw it. I love the clean and simple lines the artist has used here. In response to that, I kept this card very simple, essentially just adding lots of colour. I love the result.
