Would you like to experiment with a design like this? You'll find a supply list below, including a link to the stencil I used from A Colorful Life Designs. Let’s get Started:

Card Base: 5.5 x 8.5, scored and folded at 4.25

Black Oval Border:5.25 x 4 (before die cutting)

Card Face:5.5 x 4.25

Focal Image on white: 5.25 x 4 (before die cutting)

Card Face:

  • I put this into an embossing folder and ran it through the Big Shot - but before that I used a brayer to apply pink ink to the half of the folder with the recessed areas. This gave me a somewhat splotchy pink background, leaving the raised pattern (script) uncoloured. I could have repeated the process to get a solid pink, but instead I applied gold ink to the raised areas and randomly over the edges and surface.

Focal Piece:

  • I stamped the image with Memento black and coloured it with alcohol markers.

  • I laid it on my grip mat and positioned the stencil. I applied soft pink ink across the exposed areas, avoiding the stamped image.

  • I spattered the background with metallic gold watercolour, laying a scrap of paper over the image to protect it and moving the paper as necessary to spatter different portions of the background.

  • I die cut the image using an oval die.

.

Other:

  • I die cut another oval from the black cardstock, using an oval one size larger than the one used for the focal piece.

  • I looked through my binder ** and found the sentiment, whih had been prepared for another project but not used in the end. The burgundy background turned out to be perfect for this one - serendipity at it’s best!

** See Ready To Go Binder under Techniques in the header to learn how I use this tool to save both time and money.

Assembly

  • I glued the white oval to the black one, and glued this to the card face, allowing them to hang off the left hand side.

  • I trimmed them off to be flush with the left-hand side.

  • I cut a piece of twine approximately 9” long and tied the two ends together with a knot. After cutting the twine again at the halfway point I secured the ends behind the card face with scotch tape.

  • I put dimensional foam on the back of the card face and then adhered it to the card base. (I often do this when I have bulky twine on a piece as it’s difficult to glue it nicely.)

  • I added the sentiment, after glueing a couple of extra layers of card stock under the right hand side to buld it up to be the same depth as the left hand side + the two ovals.

Final Thoughts:

I am really happy with this card. The image has a slightly rustic look and this design came together with a rustic chic look .
